SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea successfully launched a long-range missile into the air on Wednesday.
North Korean officials say they simply launched a satellite into orbit, although critics say it was a disguised ballistic missile test to prepare for long-range nuclear missiles.
Two hours after it was launched, North Korean media announced that it was a success. The White House called it a "highly provocative act that threatens regional security."
North Korea has spent decades trying to perfect a long range rocket. This is the fifth attempt at a long-range launch since 1998, when Pyongyang sent a rocket over Japan.
