Fitness expert Lorna Kleidman responds to a new study which has found that brief exercise can enhance memory.

On December 13, Lorna Kleidman issued a response to new research that has found a link between exercise and memory enhancement.
According to an article from Medical News Today, “A short burst of moderate exercise enhances the consolidation of memories in both healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, scientists with UC Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory have discovered.”
The article states that similar research that has linked memory with exercise has focused on long term exercise programs as they relate to cognitive brain function. However this new study is the first to show the benefits of short bouts of exercise on memory.
The study – which was conducted by post-doctoral researcher Sabrina Segal and neurobiologists Carl Cotman and Lawrence Cahill – used test subjects between the ages of 50 to 85 years old, reports the article. The subjects would “view pleasant images - such as photos of nature and animals - and then exercise on a stationary bicycle for six minutes at 70 percent of their maximum capacity immediately afterward.”
The article goes on to explain that one hour later subjects were given a surprise recall test on the images they were shown. According to Medical News Today, the results showed that people who exercised had a far better ability to recall the images than those that did not.
Lorna Kleidman, a kettlebell trainer and fitness expert, was very interested in the findings. “We all know that exercise improves our overall health, and it’s great to now know that our memory is improved by exercise as well,” Kleidman stated. “This is just another reason that more people need to stay active.”
