SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Officials have drafted new rules but they are not yet signed into law regarding fracking in California.
The process known as fracking makes fractures beneath the earth's surface to draw out resources, like oil. Fractures are made thousands of feet below the surface and are made by injecting rocks with chemical-laced water and sand.
If the new regulations pass, oil companies would be required to disclose where they use fracking what chemicals they use.
Environmentalists have criticized these rules saying they are too lenient.
Oil producers say fracking is safe and not harmful.
A report revealed in October that in Santa Barbara County, fracking has been going on for decades near Los Padres National Forest and revealed hundreds of active wells.
A spokesperson for the forest said they are not aware of any detrimental results.
