The National Rifle Association came out with a statement following the deadly Connecticut shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. On Friday the NRA held a news conference saying students would be better protected in the classroom if there was an armed officer on campus.

The NRA's Wayne LaPierre called on Congress to put armed security officers in every school throughout the United States.

The NRA argued that guns in school would be more effective to prevent school shootings rather than tougher gun laws. "What if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, he had been confronted by qualified, armed security?" LaPierre asked. "Will you at least admit it's possible that 26 innocent lives might have been spared? Is that so abhorrent to you that you would rather continue to risk the alternative?"

LaPierre estimated the costs of putting a police officer into every school would be around $5.4 billion nationwide. He also said there needs to be a national database for the mentally ill.
