ATASCADERO, Calif. – The Atascadero Police Department, along with other "Avoid 14" law enforcement agencies, recently conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, December 21, 2012. The checkpoint, held on the 8400 block of El Camino Real between 6:00pm and 12:00am, included nearly 700 cars and netted three arrests, including one for DUI. The two other arrests included one suspect for illegal drugs and the other suspect wanted for two outstanding warrants. For additional information, see story below.

Atascadero Police Department Traffic Unit with other AVOID 14 partners conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on 12/21/12, in the 8400 block of El C amino Real between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint lowers DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired bring about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
During the checkpoint officers stopped a suspect for suspicion of driving under influence and in the process officer determined the suspect was in possession of several ounces of methamphetamine with the intent to sell. The suspect was arrested and booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail.

The San Luis Obispo AVOID 14 coalition will be conducting another DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on December 28th in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.
