NORAD Gets Record Number of Calls on Christmas

Posted: Updated:

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Volunteers at a U.S. Air Force Base answered a record number of calls about Santa this year.

NORAD helped children all over the world track Santa Claus.  NORAD workers say they got calls about a wide range of things, including St. Nick's age and how reindeer can fly.

NORAD was actually started as a mistake in 1995, when an advertisement in a Colorado newspaper listed the phone number for Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.  Officers played along, and since then, NORAD's tracking has gone global, tracking Santa through their website, as well as through Facebook and Twitter.

Lt. Stacey Fenton said trackers had answered more than 111,000 calls up to midnight, breaking last year's record of 107,000.
