SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif- San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties are among some of the best counties in the state, when it comes to finding a job. But for many on the central coast, the figures don't hold true, and finding a job still seems impossible.
David Markin was let go at a manufacturing company, ending his 19 year career, now he's losing much more. "Because I lost my job, I'm going to lose my house," said David Markin, a job seeker.
Unemployment in San Luis Obispo County is at 7.3 percent down from 8.6 percent last November, and Santa Barbara County is 7.3 percent as well, down from 8.2 percent.
Both numbers are still lower than the state, which is hovering around 9.8 percent. People on the central coast still out of a job said these numbers may look good on paper, but something isn't adding up. "To me I have been looking since March, I haven't found anything, it's not like I'm sitting around, I'm trying as hard as I can to find something," aid Markin.
With strong employment numbers, some unemployment benefits have expired, some even cut. "The unemployment rate is down so that's good, but to people who aren't finding jobs what are we supposed to do now that they are going to cut the unemployment, I've got to get out there and work harder to try and find something," said Markin.
The number of unemployed in retail may go up slightly next month as well, when those hired on for the holiday are let go. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc, an outplacement company, they estimated about 760-thousand people were hired for the holidays in retail this year.
