Caltrans Plans to Open Highway 1 Near Big Sur For the Weekend

Posted: Updated:

BIG SUR, Calif. -- Caltrans has announced that Highway 1 south of Big Sur will be opened to traffic this weekend starting Friday night at Partington Ridge Road.

The highway was shut after a rockslide happened along the roadway on December 23rd. Since then Caltrans has contracted crews to repair the 60-foot section of the highway that was damaged. Caltrans plans to lift restrictions at 5:00 p.m. Friday, for two-way traffic.

Caltrans said one-way traffic controls will start again on Monday, December 31st. Crews are still working to cleanup and repair the roadway. Anyone who needs to take the highway can expect a 20 minute delay traveling past Big Sur on Highway 1.

Drivers are being told to use extra caution because some parts of the road still have loose gravel near the rock slide area. The highway was previously shut down from the 41 mile marker near Coast Gallery and the 23rd mile marker near Lucia.

Crews will continue to work clearing the road starting January 2nd to 4th for final repairs.
