SANTA MARIA, Calif. - While many are planning to ring in the new year with a glass or two of champagne, local officials are urging drivers to be safe this holiday.
State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, along with California Highway Patrol and local law officials briefed the public about the importance of not drinking and driving. They say New Years is the deadliest driving night of the year.
"Designate a driver to be attentive, not to be on their phones, texting, make sure they're wearing their seat belts." said Senator Jackson. "Tonight is a night that should be a night of celebration and not a night of tragedy."
Meantime, California Highway Patrol says, since Friday, 84 people have been arrested on the Central Coast for driving under the influence.
