Small Plane Crashes On Oceano Dunes, Pilot Killed

Posted: Updated:

OCEANO, Calif.-A pilot is dead after crashing his plane on Oceano Dunes Wednesday afternoon. Authorities say the plane crashed about 15 miles past the gates of the Oceano Dunes near Marker 14.

Investigators say just after 4:00 Wednesday afternoon a small plane, a vintage Luscombe 8a, crashed on the Oceano Dunes.

"State park rangers and lifeguards arrived on scene very quickly and were able to determine there was one victim on board of this two seat light aircraft," said Chief Ranger, Brent Marshall, Oceano Dunes.

Chief Ranger Brent Marshall says emergency crews gave the pilot CPR, but he died at about 4:30pm, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

"Cal Fire, San Luis ambulance, CHP and other allied agencies were able to help out including the sheriff," said Marshall.

Officials blocked off the crash site and would not let anyone in. The Sheriff's Office is working to determine the cause of death while the Federal Aviation Administration along with the National Transportation Safety Board investigate the crash.

"The state park peace officers and the rangers and life guards were able to get great witness statements and so we will be able to make a determination in cooperation with the FAA to see if we can make a determination whether it was, what the cause of the crash was," said Marshall.

As of Wednesday evening, the name of the pilot has not been released.  He is described as a white male adult.
