Gun Background Checks Soaring

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif- Gun sales and gun background checks have soared. November and December are known to be record months for gun sales, but this year there were more factors than just Christmas shopping.

"The first time the election came about the same thing happened, there was a rush on gun buying and a rush on ammunition, then when the re-election took place that brought in another rush," said Kathy Zalusky, Owner of Uncle Ed's Outfitters.

Soon after, the elementary school massacre in Connecticut happened.  "Obama put the speech out that now there had to be more gun control, that started another rush," said Zalusky.

In Zalusky's shop, there are empty gun racks, Zalusky said it's unusual. "People are buying them up quicker than we can get them in," said Zalusky.

Those who have guns are holding on to them, Jeff Ballard put his gun on consignment at Zalusky's store, but has since changed his mind. "It was an extra gun, and with everything that's going down, there might be a chance that I may not be able to have that gun, so I'm not going to get rid of it," said Jeff Ballard, a gun owner.

In the past two months gun background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation have sky rocketed. Nationally in November gun background checks were a littler over 2-million and December nearly 2.8 million, a 49-percent jump from last December.
