MARINA, Calif.--The Marina Fire Department responded late last night to a structure fire in the 29-hundred block of Carpenter Court in Marina.
It got the call just before midnight.
When they got to the scene, they found a hallway light fixture that had an electrical malfunction and a fire burning the supporting 2x4 rafter that the light fixture was attached to.
The occupant was awakened by the smoke alarm that was sounding from the smoke that was emanating through the light fixture.
The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to the ceiling 2x4 and the light fixture.
This incident serves as a reminder to make sure you have working smoke alarms. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice a year. A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries when you change your clocks.
