SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria Police have identified the man killed in an officer involved shooting as 49-year-old Robert Guzman.
The shooting happened at a home on East Sunset Avenue late Sunday night. Police responded to the home, after hearing that Guzman and his wife were in an argument and learning that she was stabbed.
Police say Guzman stabbed his wife in their home, across from where the shooting was. The wife then ran to her friend's house across the street, where Guzman broke a window to get inside.
When officers arrived on scene, they found Guzman with a knife and an unidentified weapon. They say he refused to drop the weapons and get on the ground after they told him to do so, so they say they were forced to open fire in self defense. Several gunshots hit Guzman before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Guzman's wife is expected to recover from her stab wounds. The shooting is still under investigation.
