CBS: School To Be Named After Teacher Killed in Sandy Hook School Shooting

Posted: Updated:

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- CBS is reporting a city near Newtown is renaming a local school after a teacher killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Officials said HoneySpot Elementary in Stratford will be renamed after 27-year old Victoria Soto, who was killed trying to save her students. CBS reported that Soto told the gunman that her students were in the gym, then he shot her.

The shooter, Adam Lanza killed 20 children and 6 staff members of Sandy Hook Elementary School before committing suicide. Lanza also killed his mother at their home in Newtown.

CBS reported that Stratford Mayor John Harkins made the recommendation to change the school name, which was approved on Monday.

The city also plans to create a memorial of Soto in town, and a new petition is going around to name a street after her.

Soto graduated from Stratford High School in 2003.
