Military Suicides Surge in 2012

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Military suicides surged to record numbers in 2012.

349 active-duty troops committed suicide last year, which is more than the number of Americans killed in combat in Afghanistan.

That's up from 301 suicides in 2011 and it's the highest total since the Pentagon started tracking suicides closely back in 2001.

The Army has the largest number of suicides among military branches.
