Local Gun Owners Keep Quiet About New Gun Control Measures

SANTA MARIA, Calif.- Whether you are for or against gun ownership, President Obama's 23 newly signed executive orders combating gun violence have people fired up; but there's one group whose not talking on camera, local gun owners.

"There's just a lot of paranoia right now among people and a lot of uncertainty and when you have those two combined it makes for reluctant people to come forward," said retired FBI agent, Dan Payne.

Richard's Guns & Gunsmithing, Tacti-cool Guns & Gear and Santa Maria Gun Club are just three of nearly a dozen gun shops that refused to talk. Many saying they feared how they would be portrayed.

"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact they're in fear of being targeted by burglars or something like that. If they become identified as gun owners maybe the government would make note of that and come after their guns in a later day," explained Payne.

For Larry Viegas, who served in World War II and never carried a gun, he says guns are being given to the wrong people.

"I think they should be banned completely as far as I'm concerned for civilians. Let the law enforcement handle it I think there the ones that need the protection," said Larry Viegas.

The Senate plans to begin taking up President Obama's proposals next week.
