SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The victim in the deadly hit and run in Santa Barbara on Tuesday has been identified as the former junior varsity baseball coach for Santa Barbara High School.
Fred Warracker, the current head coach on the team, says that 22-year-old Simon Chavez was heavily involved with the group since he graduated from the school.
Both the boys and girls basketball teams will hold moments of silence for Chavez at their games on Thursday and Friday. The boys team will also play with Chavez's initials on their uniforms.
Meantime, the search is still on the for the driver who hit and killed Chavez. California Highway Patrol officials say the crash happened between the Ortega Street pedestrian over crossing and the off ramp at Castillo Street. A Hyundai took off from the scene without its driver's side door mirror.
Anyone with more information about the driver is urged to contact Santa Barbara CHP at (805) 967-1234.
