SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- A coyote was shot Tuesday, right above some homes in the Irish Hills in San Luis Obispo. Jeff Krause was taking pictures of the coyote when it happened. Krause and his son called Pacific Wildlife Care for help and hiked up with them to help the wounded animal.
"I heard the pop clear as day from right there, we saw the coyote right at that moment flop over on its back, and we got a sick feeling in our stomach right then it was like we knew the coyote had been shot, and we saw it moving, it was on its back we could see its tail up in the air and its feet kicking," said Krause.
Pacific Wildlife Care took the animal to its hospital in Morro Bay but it was so badly wounded they had to euthanize it. The gun used was a led projectile gun which is illegal as there is a lead ban in the area. The reason being is when an animal is shot and its not retrieved a condor could get to it, eat it, and get lead poisoning.
They are still searching for the person but need information from the public in order to continue the investigation. Krause believes he knows where the shot was fired and is assisting.
