Missing Hiker Found Safe

UPDATE: An Atascadero man reported missing after he didn't return home from hiking trip has been found safe Monday.

Richard Gates, 44, went missing Saturday after he went hiking near Ragged Point. A rescue helicopter landed to pick him up at just after 1:00pm Monday. He was then flown to Ragged Point, for medics to evaluate his condition.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Search and Rescue are searching for 44-year-old Richard Gates of Atascadero after he did not return from a hike.

According to SLO County Sheriffs:

On 1-20-13, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office was contacted about a missing person. 44-year-old Richard Gates had left on 1-19-13 at approximately 6:30 AM to go hiking in the Ragged Point area along the north coast of the county. He parked his vehicle at the Ragged Point Inn. His wife says Gates would sometimes spend the night when he goes hiking. When he did not return home on 1-20-13, she filed a missing person report.  The Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue Unit was activated at 6:00 PM. Gates is described as a white male adult, 6'0, 290 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes and a beard. He was possibly wearing khaki pants, a long sleeved khaki shirt and brown boots. If the public has any information on the whereabouts of Richard Gates please call the Sheriff's Office at 781-4550.
