UPDATE: Deadly Hit and Run Accident, Person of Interest in Custody

SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas Police confirmed with Central Coast News on Monday evening, a person of interest has been lodged at the Monterey County Jail, in connection to a fatal hit and run accident Sunday night.

It happened just after 7:00pm, on South Sanborn Road and McGowan Street.

According to police, the driver of a Honda Accord turned left onto South Sanborn from McGowan Street, directly into the path of a Chevy Trailblazer, which was northboundon South Sanborn Road. The SUV struck the Honda in the driver side door, causing major damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, and a female passenger was aitlifted to San Jose with unspecified injuries. Neither occupants have been identified.

The Chevy Trailblazer was located in a neighborhood nearby and recovered.

The Salinas Police Department is not ready to file charges with the Monterey County District Attorney's Office. The identity of the person of interest is not being released.

The case is still under investigation.
