WASHINGTON -- The Associated Press is reporting that Defense Secretary and Central Coast native Leon Panetta is removing the ban on women serving in combat.
The move overturns the 1994 rule which bans women from being assigned to front line combat roles.
The decision now would open hundreds of thousands of front line postiitons.
Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.
