Bringing New Life to Former SM Recycling Plant

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA - SA Recycling wants to operate an environmentally-friendly, modern recycling plant at 1599 West Betteravia Road in Santa Maria.

The company plans to refurbish and renovate existing buildings on the nearly four acre parcel and clean up the mess that's been left by years of industrial use include most recently vehicle impound lots.

City planners and those behind the SA Recycling plant project maintain the site is an appropriate location because its consistent with existing use on the property.

Central Coast News has learned the property has twice-before been used for recycling operations.

The project site is also just down Betteravia Road from other existing recycling plants which would be competitors in the recycling and scrap metal business

Homeowners who've appealed the Santa Maria City Planning Commission decision to grant a permit for the SA recycling plant claim, among other things, it will create harmful traffic impacts.

Studies show the plant would attract about an additional 65 vehicles trips a day, most of which would be passenger cars on one of the busiest roads in the Santa Maria Valley.

The SA Recycling Plant appeal will be heard by the Santa Maria City Council on Feb. 19.
