New Leaf Donates Over 3.3 Tons of Poultry to Second Harvest Food Bank

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- New Leaf Community Markets announced that they've donated over three tons of poultry to Second Harvest Food Bank. Since 2006 the group has donated over 13 tons of food. The food was delivered on January 24th, and was a 49% increase from how much was donated last year.

New Leaf said they partnered with MBA Poultry to make the donation. Over 2 tons of the food went to the local Santa Cruz County Second Harvest Food Bank and 1.3 tons went to food banks in Santa Clara and San Mateo County.

The donations are done through the Smart Giving Program. "Recent numbers show that demand is higher than ever in Santa Cruz County. Since meat is our most expensive food item to purchase for our 200 member agencies and programs, we couldn't be happier with this donation from New Leaf," said Second Harvest Food Bank CEO Willy Elliott-McCrea.

New Leaf also gave a $2,000 donation to Second Harvest as part of their holiday fair. Second Harvest helps distribute over 7.3 million pounds of food every year to poor families, children and senior citizens.
