Posted: Updated:

HOLLISTER, Calif. -- Police said a man with a handgun walked into the Hollister Super Market along Third Street early Wednesday morning and demanded money from a cashier, then took off running.

It happened around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday before the store was even open. Police said the man made his way in through the front door which is usually unlocked for deliveries.

Investigators said the suspect walked up to an employee and demanded money. The store clerk complied with the suspect's request and gave him an undisclosed amount of cash from a nearby safe and cash register. Officers said as the suspect started running out of the store a few employees started to chase after him, then the suspect started threatening them with a handgun.

Witnesses said the armed robber was last seen running southbound on East Street.

Police said the suspect is described as a Hispanic male with a black beard who is 5'0'' to 5'2'' with a heavyset build. Officers said the man was also seen loitering in the parking lot before the robbery happened. Witnesses said the man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and was carrying a silver handgun.

Hollister police are still looking for the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call 636-4330 or WeTip at (800) 78-CRIME.
