Orcutt Union School District Tightening Up Safety Measures

Posted: Updated:

ORCUTT, Calif. - "I feel like any extra precautions they can take to keep all the kids safe is a good precaution."

Rachele Uribe's daughter is a sophomore at Orcutt Academy High School. She said she never worried about her children's safety at school, but that was before the Sandy Hook elementary shooting last month.

"Until the recent events, it really started to worry me," says Uribe.

Orcutt Union School District Superintendent Bob Bush points to the badge that every non-student has to wear on campus, even staff members. It's part of the school district's effort to tighten up safety measures that have been in place but not enforced fully.

The school district hasn't always been strict about having parents, volunteers, and visitors wear badges when they come on campus. But now it is.

"You might have the PTA president who wants to walk on campus. Everybody knows her but now we're saying 'no, you have to check in the office'," says Bush.

Schools will also have to lock all gates around campus to force visitors to enter from the front. Bush says he doesn't want to overreact with extreme safety measures, but he says its something he doesn't take lightly.

"The bottom line is, when a child enters that campus, when a staff member enters that campus, I want it to be safe for them and i want them to feel safe," says Bush.
