SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo closed its doors on Thursday night, but the owner tells Central Coast News that he's optimistic about reaching a new lease deal with his landlord.
Owner Bruce Sanborn said the theater closed on Thursday because the lease for the building is up. But he says there may be some hope.
He received a last minute proposal from the legal council of his landlord on Wednesday. At this point, they still need to work out the details, but it could mean that the theatre can reopen.
Meantime, many are sad to see the theater go. Carol Gin has been going to the theatre ever since she was a little girl and remembers her uncle being one of the first projectionists there.
"There is nothing like it in San Luis." said Gin. "I mean, it's just so beautiful and so retro and so fun and exciting. I would really hate to see it close down and see the lights go off for the last time. That would be very sad."
It is not known if the theater will reopen its doors. Sanborn said if the proposal goes through, the theater may be around for at least another year.
