PISMO BEACH, Calif. -  Sure, most of the attention may be on the Superbowl, but State Park officials are celebrating the California Western Monarch butterfly this weekend in Pismo Beach.

The event will be held on Saturday, February 2nd at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, located about a quarter of a mile north of Grand Avenue on the west side of Highway 1.

The event is open to the public.  Docents and volunteers will be available in the grove from 10:00am to 4:00pm with some special activities running from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  Officials encourage children  to come dressed in costume as butterflies or other creatures from the natural world.

The Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of the largest colonies of its kind in the nation, hosting an average of 25,000 butterflies over the last five years.
