CAMBRIA, Calif. - San Luis Coastal Unified School District is looking at ways to handle a boom in enrollment at Bishops Peak Elementary.
Zoe Piette, a student at Teach Elementary says, "I want the school board to keep it because it is a great school!"
More families with young children are moving into the surrounding neighborhood. The school already has 522 students in grades K-6, and expects to run out of room.
Charles E Teach Elementary an alternative school for 150 gifted and talented students grades 4th through 6th, started back in 1980. It serves students from across the district and has shared the Bishop campus since 2001.
The district is now considering closing teach to make room for the growing enrollment at Bishop's.
Morgan Robertson, who has a child at Teach School says, "To close a thriving school because another school has capacity issues shouldn't be one of the options up for consideration."
The district is looking at six options for handling the problem. The options include immediately closing Teach and absorbing the students into Bishop's. Moving the program to another school site. Slowly phasing out the program. Or possibly adding portable buildings to an already crowded campus, where neighbors complain about the heavy morning and afternoon traffic during drop-off and pick-up.
Some of the parents who spoke to Central Coast News with students at Bishop's, didn't want to go on camera but did say sharing the campus hasn't been easy and they would support moving or phasing out the teach program.
The school board will be hearing from parents at the upcoming meet Tuesday night. Dozens of parents are expected voice their concerns.
