Oven Explodes in Pizza Restaurant in Montecito

MONTECITO, Calif. - Santa Barbara Police responded to a 911 call at 10:30am what dispatch said initially was a medical situation at Giovanni's Pizza at 1187 Coast Village Road in Montecito.

Shortly thereafter, Dispatch amended the call to a report of an explosion. Santa Barbara Police, Fire and Paramedics responded to the incident. They found a pizza employee had attempted to light a pilot light in a pizza oven. Gas had been building up and exploded when he tried to light it. The explosion knocked the employee back and caused damage within the kitchen. 
 
The employee received moderate injuries and was transported to Cottage Hospital for treatment. All damage was contained to the  to the pizza restaurant and no other businesses.
 
The Employee is a 38 year old male. The gas department and health department responded to make sure everything was OK as well.
