PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREAN - North Korea detonated a miniaturized nuclear device at a northeast North Korea test site Tuesday, which caused a nearly 6.0 magnitude earthquake and international uproar, almost immediately.
The move was in direct violation of orders from the U.N. Security Council to shut down all atomic activity across the nation or face the remaining sanctions not already imposed, including cutting off oil access and trade with China and international isolation.
North Korea called the test "successful" Tuesday, and said they were done in calm,
CBS News said the explosion could be a big step toward their goal of building a nuclear warhead small enough to mount on a long-range missile that could threaten the United States.
