SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Students were evacuated from Pine Creek condominiums because officials say 36 of the units violated health and safety codes.
Authorities responded when a resident called recently, complaining of a fire hazard when her clothes were getting hot.
Fire inspectors discovered that a loft originally approved for storage and the clothes closet was actually a closet for the gas-fired water heater and air furnace. They say this raises the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, asphyxiation, or fire.
Officials say residents in other units had similar problems. The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department teamed up with the Community Development Department to monitor all of the units. They say that all of them violate health and safety codes and have posted a "notice of violation" on their doors.
City officials notified Cal Poly and University Housing on Friday and the university has made all the necessary preparations to house the displaced students at the university's residence halls.
