Man Caught in the Middle of a Chase

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- Luck was on the side of one Salinas man after he unknowingly got in the middle of a police chase.

It started this afternoon near East Market and Soledad streets when police caught up with a suspect involved in an assault.

Just the fact that Sunny Zamora still has a car Thursday afternoon is a miracle.

"I made a u-turn to come back and was going in to the parking lot when the guy jumped in and said 'Go! Go! I said Go where?!'"

Sunny had just found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time during a police chase after a 9-1-1 call about a brutal fight.  Lucky for Sunny, Salinas police weren't far behind the suspect who had just chosen Sunny as a get-away driver.

"I said 'Oh my God! What's going on because they got out with their guns, pointing their guns yelling get down! Get down!' They weren't pointing at me but at him."

The fight broke out near Chinatown, an area notorious for homelessness and drugs, a place the city usually tries to move people out of; but for the first time Thursday, a city-sanctioned block party actually brought services and resources to the people who need it most.

It's a promise the new mayor made after the city spent another $10,000 to clear out the homeless who have a propensity for coming right back.

And Zamora is hoping the more help that comes to this area, means it won't happen to him again, "I'm lucky he didn't have a gun or anything...He could've pointed it at me, I would've had to go!"

Officers said they took the man into custody for possession of narcotics and other charges.
