Cal Poly Student Brings Rifle to School

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- A gun was found last week in a students dorm room on Cal Poly Campus. Cal Poly Police said it was a .22 caliber rifle. According to police, no firearms or other weapons are allowed on campus. There is one exception, students can have a concealed weapon permit but the gun has to be a hand gun and concealed at all times.

Some students who live in the residence hall find incidents like this one a little scary. "Having that in a dorm if they've got ammunition and everything is pretty scary especially as close the quarters are in there, there's several people to a floor," said Alyssa Parr, a student at Cal Poly.

Parr lives in the same student housing at Sierra Madre as the student who had a .22-caliber rifle and ammo in his room. Parr said its unnerving because you never know whose hands the weapon can get into. "Somebody tells somebody that they saw this gun and then word spreads kind of secretly and then all the sudden you never know who might end up trying to get a hold of it," said Parr.

Cal Poly Police said they believe the student, who they are not releasing the name of, may have only had the weapon in his room for a couple days. Police Chief George Hughes said after interviewing the student he didn't believe the student was dangerous.

"Because of the totality, one of them being he was not a threat, but also since he decided to withdraw from campus and leave the area we felt it best to that we did not need to file charges at the time," said Cal Poly Police Chief George Hughes.

Monday, police dropped the charges, had they not, the student could have faced a felony charge and possibly jail time.
