SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Luis Obispo City Fire, responded to a report of a fire on the 500 block of Westmont Ave Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived, they found a neighbor with a hose controlling the fire to one room.
Here's what SLO City Fire is saying about what happened:
SLO City Fire personnel investigating the cause of the fire in the 500 block of Westmont.
The fire was detected early by an occupant in the adjacent suite of this duplex when the working smoke detectors sounded the alarm. She found smoke coming from the suite, but nobody was inside at the time. She then stayed outside the residence and sprayed water from a garden hose until firefighters arrived to fully extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. Thanks to the quick and safe actions of this neighbor, the fire was confined to the room of origin and only moderate smoke damage occurred throughout the rest of the suite. The American Red Cross is assisting the two displaced occupants of the involved suite with their housing and other needs.
This incident is a great reminder to all residents about the value of maintaining a functional smoke detector in their home. Had it not been for the smoke detector, this fire would have grown, undetected, and threaten the entire structure.
