SANTA MARIA, Calif. -- A disabled
woman and her mother fear eviction after they say their landlord sent a letter
terminating their tenancy.
She says she can't find any
other Section 8 housing available in the area and time is running
out.
"I was scared," says Asaro.
She says her lease isn't up until
June and she has nowhere else to go.
Asaro was born with cerebral
palsy and needs help just to get in and out of bed.
She found this rare Section 8
apartment that is handicap accessible but now the landlord wants her out.
"He reasons being were they have
complaints about her dog," says Jessica's mother Liz Asaro.
"Her dog is a therapy service dog and also the
complaints were the stains on the carpet and, yes, that happens with a power
wheelchair but we spot clean it regularly."
The Asaro's say they've looked
everywhere for another place to live.
"You'll see there's so many
listings for rentals but nothing for Section 8 and when you do call, the ones
that are Section 8, a lot of them are older housing," says Liz. "The doorways
are narrow so we can't get her through a doorway and there's no way for it to be
accessible for a power wheelchair."
Jessica has lived her for more
than two years but come March 31st, she fears she will be out on the streets.
"I'm scared," says Jessica.
"Where am I going to go now? Where am I going to end up?"
Central Coast News reached out to
the landlord, Linda Kennedy, but phone calls and messages were not immediately
returned.
