According to the Santa Cruz Sheriff, Det. Butler and Sgt. Baker were doing a routine  investigation into a misdemeanor sexual assault "and just doing their job." The officers were trying to talk to the suspect about the incident. Goulet opened fire and hit the two officers. They were both killed on his door step, said the sheriff in a news conference.

Goulet stole their car but was unable to leave the area because responding officers were immediately at the scene and closed off the area near the shooting on Branciforte.

Officers canvassing the area ran in to Goulet on Doyle street and exchanged gunfire. Goulet was hit and he died at the scene.

According to Sheriff Wowak, Goulet had three guns on him and was wearing body armor.
