Highway 68 Drivers Want Improvements Following Deadly Crash

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Highway 68 commuters said the road is dangerous and they want more improvements following a deadly accident.

On Thursday, a 55-year-old Monterey woman died in a head-on collision on the highway.

Monterey Police said she was ejected from her car after crossing into on-coming traffic near York Road.

Drivers told Central Coast News they don't feel safe on Highway 68 because the two-lane highway doesn't have a center divide.

"Every day people are drifting and not paying attention. I see it every day, people driving extremely defensively. I don't recall it ever being as bad as it is," said Eva Goodman, who works off of Highway 68.

Goodman works near the area of the deadly crash.

"We think it could be one of us at any moment when we take that road every day," she said.

"You stay alert, especially after hearing about that accident yesterday, but you still see it going on even this morning," said Michelle Bungardner, who works off of Highway 68.

That's why Bungardner said she wants to see a center divide added on the highway. The Transportation Agency for Monterey County said doing that would be a major project. It would mean widening the highway by about 12 feet in order to put a divide there, something that's not even in the works right now.

"Recently, they did put in little bumps, so if you veer off you're definitely alerted to that, but you see people texting and looking down all the time in either direction," Bungardner said.

Goodman said it doesn't matter what improvements are made. She said some of the drivers are the problem.

"Stop texting. Stop worrying about your kids," she said. "We got to stay focused on that road."
