The head of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says department employees misspent millions of department dollars over the past several years.
A state audit last year found about five thousand dollars had been spent improperly.
But Department Communications Director Mike Taughner told state lawmakers yesterday that an internal review found millions had been misspent.
"Our field staff is stretched thin, and they don't always have the resources that the need for their job and it's reasonable to think they thought that this was a way to fund deptartment work," said Taughner.
The department has sent out guidance to department employees to make sure the problems stop.
