Investigation Finds No Evidence of Criminal Violations by SMPD in Covarrubias Case

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley has announced that based upon her independent review, there was no evidence of underlying criminal violations by any Santa Maria Police Department personnel in regards to the shooting death of former Officer Albert Covarrubias Junior.

This comes less than week after Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin announced that several people in the Department were in trouble for their roles in the case.  The names of those people have not been revealed, but Central Coast News has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the City of Santa Maria to receive them.

Dudley also expressed her gratitude to Martin for his professionalism in the way he handled what she calls this "most difficult matter."
