Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Sexually Assaulting, Robbing Woman At Hotel

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Police have arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman at a San Luis Obispo hotel.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. Thursday, San Luis Obispo police officers responded to the San Luis Inn and Suites along Santa Rosa St. for reports of a sexual assault and armed robbery.

The woman told officers that a man -- later identified as 49-year-old Gregory Erwin -- agreed to meet her at a hotel room sometime after midnight.

She told police that when Erwin arrived, he sexually assaulted her, then removed cash from her purse and left the area in a white Ford Ranger pickup.

The victim told officers that during the assault, Erwin pointed a handgun at her and threatened to kill her. She provided officers with a description of Erwin.

According to police, when Erwin left the room, the victim followed him to the parking lot and provided a license plate number of the Ford Ranger he drove away in to police.

Investigators say they responded to Erwin's home in the 200 block of W. Park St. in the city of Santa Maria where they found him attempting to leave in his vehicle. He was taken into custody and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Investigators say they obtained a search warrant for his residence where evidence of the crime was recovered.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department says it is contacting other law enforcement agencies to determine if the suspect is responsible for other sexual assaults in the San Luis Obispo County area.
