Breaking: Senate Passes Bill to Avoid Shutdown, For Now

Posted: Updated:

Washington, D.C.- The Senate has voted to keep the doors of the US Government open until September 30th. The measure will prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month.

The Associated Press reports that the law will keep the spending cuts in place and that means whatever furloughs are in place due to the sequester will remain.

The bipartisan vote of 76-23 means that the spending bill will now go to the House where it's expected to pass and then President Obama will sign it on Thursday.

Day-to-day operating budgets for every Cabinet agency will get a cash infusion through Sept. 30. It will also spend another $87 billion for overseas military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and maintain a pay freeze for federal workers.

The Pentagon gets the money it needs for training and readiness. Vets get their health programs and their scheduled increases.
