SANTA MARIA - 19 year old Verenisa Aviles is the latest defendant to be charged in what prosecutors say was a gang-related, torture killing of Anthony Ibarra in a home on West Donovan Street on March 17.
Police say Ibarra's body was found in the back of a U-Haul trailer truck parked in Orcutt on March 19.
Including Aviles, a total of 9 defendants have been charged in the Ibarra homicide, seven of which including Aviles could face the death penalty based on the current charges against them.
All 9 defendants are expected to appear in Santa Maria Court on April 10 to enter a plea to the charges against them.
Veteran prosecutors and defense attorneys at Santa Maria Court say they cannot remember a potential death penalty murder case involving 9 defendants.
"I haven't seen a case like this in a long time", says veteran Santa Maria defense attorney David Bixby who is representing one of the 9 Ibarra homicide defendants.
Bixby says court administration will have to maneuver to accommodate all 9 defendants and their attorneys during future court appearances.
"I remember one year we conducted court out in the parking lot because there wasn't enough room in the court", Bixby says, "but it was for misdemeanor cockfighting."
Additional courtroom security will be required for the case going forward but its not expected to result in added costs for the county or the County Sheriff's Department which provides the court bailiffs and court security.
"The did it for Michael Jackson so I'm sure they can handle this", Bixby says.
There have been cases in Santa Barbara County where there have been multiple defendants and most of those cases have been gang-related.
Veteran court observers tell Central Coast News its unlikely all 9 defendants will remain together in court going forward and face the death penalty, if any do at all.
Observers expect many of the defendants will have their cases splintered off and adjudicated separately.
