Two Men Arrested, One Sought After Shots Fired At Salinas Police Officer
SALINAS, Calif. - Two men were arrested after shots were fired at a Salinas police officer early Tuesday morning; however, one suspect is still on the loose.
Salinas Police Commander Dan Perez says it all started when an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a Honda Civic at Airport and Skyway boulevards about five minutes after midnight. The driver failed to stop and a high-speed pursuit ensued through several streets in East Salinas.
Perez says at Cross Avenue, one of the passengers leaned out of a window and fired several shots at the officer. The officer was not hit, but his patrol car was damaged in the incident. Perez says the officer was not able to return fire because he was involved in the pursuit.
The chase ended about five minutes later when the Honda crashed into a tree at Natividad Creek Park located at Constitution Boulevard and Freedom Parkway. All three suspects got out and ran.
The driver of the car was taken into custody a short time later. Police say he is a 25-year-old gang member who is on parole.
CHP officers, deputies, a SWAT team and a K9 began searching for the remaining two suspects. Police say the K9 found the second suspect hiding under brush in a nearby creek bed and bit him in the leg. He was also taken into custody. Police say he is a 27-year-old gang member who is on parole.
Perez says the search for the third suspect was called off around 7:30 a.m. Officers believe he
managed to slip away before they set up a perimeter around the park. Investigators believe the suspect is in his late teens to early 20s and is considered armed and dangerous.
According to Perez, nearby Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary School was not placed on lockdown because classes were not in session at the time of the incident. He says officers prevented anyone from going onto the campus as a precaution.
The school sent out alerts to parents after 6 a.m. asking them to take their kids to Frank Paul Elementary. About 100 students were bused from that campus to Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary later in the morning. Everything at the school returned to normal after police called off the search for the third suspect.
Investigators continue to talk with the two suspects who are in custody. Perez says all three suspects face charges of attempted murder of a peace officer, felony evading and weapons and gang violations.
Anyone with information on the identity of the third suspect or his whereabouts is asked to call Salinas Police at (831) 758-7321.
