SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif- Tourism is growing in San Luis Obispo County. According to Visit San Luis Obispo County it has a 1.2-billion dollar economic impact ever year in the county alone.
Wineries, events, the beach, some would say San Luis Obispo County has it all and gives people a reason to spend. "Experiences and adventure is still something people are willing to spend dollars for, they just want to spend them maybe differently then they have in the past," said Stacie Jacob of Visit San Luis Obispo County.
Jacob said tourists are spending 405-million dollars a year and the industry is growing stronger. "We've seen about a 6-percent increase that have now escalated us past 2008 numbers, which is now putting us at the highest total economic impact for tourism ever," said Jacob. A high number that helps fund cities. "We have 79-million dollars that is going back through tax receipts that are generated by tourists that go back into running our county governments," said Jacob.
Over 15-thousand people are employed by tourism in SLO County, including people like Captain Stew. "I wouldn't have a business if it wasn't for tourism," said Stewart Hamby, owner of Captain Stew's Bay Cruise. Captain Stew gives tours on his boat in Morro Bay. He began his business last year. "We had an opportunity to get into a tourism business on the water and thought that it would be a fine early retirement little side job for us," said Captain Stew. According to these numbers, that could be the case.
A lot of the increased tourism also has to do with the increase in marketing. The tourism industry has spent more money advertising than it ever has before.
