SANTA MARIA, Calif. -- The Sheriff's Department says a defendant in the Anthony Ibarra murder trial was badly injured following an assault at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Deputies came upon an assault in progress that happened Monday around noon. They found 54-year old Pedro Torres in his cell with significant injuries, officers said. Torres was taken to a medical facility for evaluation.
No suspects have been identified at this point, the case is still under investigation, deputies say. Torres is in custody on charges related to the murder of Anthony Ibarra. He is one of the 11 defendants in the case.
Torres was scheduled to appear with the other co-defendants Thursday morning in court for their arraignment, but is unable to make it due to his injuries, officers say.
Investigators are not releasing any more information about the investigation for security reasons.
