SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- CBS is reporting five people have died, including the gunman after the suspect went off on a shooting spree near Santa Monica College. One of the victims was reportedly killed on campus.
Two men were found dead in a burning home near the school, officials said. Witnesses said they heard gunshots inside the home before it went up in flames.
Students near the scene told CBS the shooting started off campus along Pico. Students say they saw a man jump out of a car and start shooting several rounds at cars and buildings.
One witness told CBS the gunman shot one woman right in front of him. Multiple people who saw the suspected shooter said he appeared focused and the attack appeared organized and planned. The gunman was reportedly wearing all black with body armor and a helmet.
A campus worker reportedly heard the gunshots near the library and saw students running for safety. Santa Monica police said the suspect was shot down by officers on campus, along the 1900 block of Pico Boulevard.
President Barack Obama was in Santa Monica speaking at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee and was about 10 minutes away from where the shooting happened. The president was taken to LAX immediately after the shooting.
