SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In what authorities are calling the largest criminal gang case in county history, the Santa Clara County Grand Jury indicted 48 members of the Nuestra Familia criminal gang for several serious felonies. Eleven of those people indicted are from the Central Coast.
The Nuestra Familia (NF) members and associates were indicted on 77 felonies including conspiracy, witness intimidation, drug sales, weapon violations, attempted murder and murder.
Investigators say some of the members and associates are connected to five armed bank robberies where the suspects used guns and fake explosives. "This is a sophisticated, complex criminal organization that required a sophisticated, multi-faceted law enforcement and prosecutorial response," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said.
The indictment came about from investigations done by the Campbell Police Department and the San Jose Police Department with help from the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team Task force, FBI, the Santa Clara County Department of Correction's Gang Intelligence Unit, gang and Special Service investigators at the California Department of Corrections, Salinas Valley State Prisons, Gilroy Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, Santa Clara Police, Mountain View Police, Los Gatos Police, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
The DA's office says 38 men and 10 women are charged in the indictment and are alleged to be members or associates of the Nuestra Familia gang. According to investigators, the violent gang has been run from the California prison system since the 1960s. Gang exerts from the prison control as many as 27 street-level gangs in Santa Clara County. Those gangs are engaged in drug trafficking and other violent crimes, according to the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office.
The DA says the 99-page indictment against the group alleges crimes that occurred between June 10, 2010 to May 30, 2013. Those charges include a series of armed bank robberies in San Jose that were allegedly committed by six NF members and associates between late 2011 and early 2012, netting over $60,000.
The indictment also includes the murder of affiliated gang-member Martin Chacon on August 13th. Chacon was executed while sitting in the driver seat of a car in San Jose when he was shot in the back of the head, investigators said.
