AVILA BEACH, Calif. -- PG & E released a statement saying the Diablo Canyon Power Plant is being shut down for maintenance.
Unit 1 is the only plant currently shut down, Unit 2 will continue to generate full power. Crews will be conducting a safe shut down to perform necessary work for the back-up cooling system on the power plant.
PG & E decided to shut down the plant after an inspection detected a small buildup of boric acid on the unit's residual heat removal system. That system helps manage reactor coolant temperatures in the event of an emergency. Officials say Unit 1 is in safe condition and will be restored until repairs are finished.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and government officials have also been notified about the shutdown.
