SANTA MARIA - "Today was a big win for us and a lot of our friends", says Teresa Barahona and Codee Crenshaw who've been together for more than four years, "we're not domestic partners, but we've talked about marriage and stuff."
The couple says the Supreme Court rulings are vindication of what they say the issue is all about, equal rights under the constitution.
"No longer being treated like a second-class citizen anymore, now when we are ready to get married we have the choice", Barahona says, "we are excited for our elder LGBT couples who've been together like 30, 40, 50 years and now they have the choice to get married, we're excited for our future kids to be born and raised in a country that no longer defines marriage based on gender but by love."
Both women say the High Court rulings should help others who've been hiding in the shadows.
"Maybe people thought that it was wrong", Codee Crenshaw says, "people that aren't educated enough to know their rights, people might think that its wrong because its not recognized by the state."
For this couple, at least, it's a time to savor another historic movement towards equality in America.
"Posting on Facebook this morning everyone was like "yeah, congrats, we're so proud of you two, we can wait to dance at your wedding", Crenshaw says.
"I think it will take time", adds Teresa Barahona, "I think there people out there who would rather hate than love, but going forward this country as a whole is becoming more accepting of diversity in general."
