LOMPOC, Calif. - With temperatures expected to get very hot this weekend, the danger for heat-related sickness will be high. In Lompoc, two major outdoor events will be taking place.
Those enjoying the Lompoc Valley Flower Festival and the inaugural 805 Criterium bike race will be treated to plenty of sunshine. Lompoc Fire Chief Kurt Latipow is staffing additional units for the weekend to prepare for the thousands expected in the city.
"Folks are out there having a good time and they kind of lose perspective on how warm it is. And when they start to sweat they are already in trouble," says Latipow.
The Flower Festival Parade is tomorrow and the 805 Criterium on Sunday. Volunteers will have water at their request, but what about spectators?
That's where Foursquare Church in Lompoc steps in. The church has passed out free water bottles to spectators at the parade for the last 12 years. And it doesn't stop this year. The church will be armed with 5,000 water bottles and 5,000 Otter Pops to give out for free.
Pastor Bernie Federmann says, "it's our hope that we bring a smile to their face and keep them cool on the hot weekend."
One of the organizers of the 805 Criterium bike race says volunteers will be given water and they expect some of the vendors that will be here to give out water to spectators as well.
